A few days ago, desert scenes played out in the Senegalese parliament in Dakar. During a debate on the 2023 draft budget, an opposition MP attacked a representative of the ruling party. Skirmishes between several parliamentarians followed (see video above).
The starting point for the wild scenes was a dispute between the government and the opposition over the approval of the budget for the Ministry of Justice. Opposition politician Massata Samb punched Member of Parliament Amy Ndiaye Gniby of the ruling coalition in Dakar (pictured below). Gniby hit back and even threw a chair.
The turbulent session was eventually adjourned as some MPs continued to beat and insult each other. Feminists expressed outrage at the attack on MP Ndiaye, which coincided with the launch of a campaign to raise awareness about violence against women and girls.
Since the government’s electoral defeat in July, tensions have raged between the political camps. It wasn’t until September, shortly before the election of the president, that some members of the National Assembly got into a fight.
