Power plant bombing sparks crisis in North Carolina

FBI becomes involved in investigation of critical infrastructure vulnerabilities

The attack was deliberate, there’s no doubt about it. The fence was broken, the door was blown out, and the well-aimed shots that knocked out two power substations over the weekend show that someone made a deliberate decision to cut power to more than 40,000 homes in North Carolina.

The energy war is not only being waged by Russia on a large scale in Europe. Vandals, or perhaps domestic terrorists, have learned of the power of energy that heats our homes and turns on the lights of civilization. That’s why the FBI announced on Monday that it was part of the investigation that is trying to find out who caused the blackout in Moore County, two hours from Charlotte. “An attack like this on critical infrastructure is a deliberate and serious crime, so we should hope that state and federal authorities investigate thoroughly until those responsible are brought to justice,” said Governor Roy Cooper.

The fallout from this “terrible attack” forced the opening of shelters yesterday to allow residents who are without heating to warm up and house those who rely on electricity for vital health equipment. Today the provincial schools could not open and it was not even known until when they will be closed. State power company Duke Energy had put all its staff to work on the repairs, yet more than 30,000 people were still without power last night.

Could it be the work of a spiteful employee? Everything is possible, the police have said, so they have no clear clues. “No group has come out to claim responsibility for this attack or accept that others did it,” said Sheriff Ronnie Fields. What has undoubtedly come to light is the fragility of a society that can collapse by kicking a door twice and firing into the air.
