Deaths and blackouts – Selenskyj after attacks: “Our people never give up”

Date:

The Ukrainian people had to endure a new wave of Russian missile attacks on Monday. Once again, the invaders fired on key infrastructure with high-accuracy, long-range weapons. Due to the consequences of the shelling, the Ukrainian energy supplier Ukrenergo warned of nationwide power cuts. Meanwhile, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy assured in a video message: “Our people never give up”.

According to their own statements, the Ukrainian air defense managed to intercept about 60 of the 70 Russian guided missiles. Zelenskyj celebrated this success Monday night in his daily video address. “Every Russian missile launched is concrete proof that terrorism can be defeated,” he said. Still, there were several hits. “Unfortunately, there are victims,” said Zelenskyj. Four people were killed.

Fired at three power plants
In addition, three power plants in the Kiev, Vinnytsia and Odessa regions were fired upon.
The attacks caused power outages in parts of the country, such as Odessa. The water supply also failed in the port city, the mayor announced (see tweet below). The national electricity grid is still intact, Prime Minister Denys Schmyhal wrote on Telegram.

Nearly half of Ukraine’s power grid has been damaged by Russian missile strikes in recent weeks. Due to the critical situation, energy supplier Ukrenergo has announced emergency shutdowns for all regions of Ukraine. In this way, the “balance between electricity generation and consumption” must be maintained, Ukrenergo announced on Monday. Important infrastructure facilities would be supplied with electricity as a priority.

‘Situation is difficult but under control’
“The situation is difficult, but under control,” he said. Some power plants may temporarily not run at full capacity. “Combined with the increasing frost in the next 24 hours, this will lead to an electricity shortage in the system,” explains Ukrenergo. Necessary repairs were underway. Following military setbacks, Moscow has fired rockets into Ukraine’s energy infrastructure eight times since October. Large parts of the country only have electricity per hour.

The new wave of attacks by Russian troops on Ukraine came not only on the day the oil embargo on Russian oil came into effect, but also on the anniversary of the signing of the Budapest Memorandum. In the document signed on December 5, 1994, Russia, Britain and the United States had jointly given security guarantees to Ukraine, Belarus and Kazakhstan for their renunciation of all Soviet-era nuclear weapons on their territory. The signatories pledged, among other things, to respect the sovereignty and existing borders of the three ex-Soviet republics.

The fate of this document answers many of today’s questions about Russia, Zelenskyy said. “Just sign something with these terrorists – there will be no peace. Just agree something with them – they will surely violate it.’ “Only destroying Russian terrorist capabilities, only liberating our entire country and only convicting the killers can bring peace,” he said.
