Iranians start the general strike despite the disbandment of the Moral Police

Date:

The protesters celebrate the first day of the strike and the regime warns that new methods will be introduced to control the use of the veil

The ambiguous statements of Iran’s Attorney General, Mohamad Javad Montazeri, about the suspension of the work of the moral police did not affect the mood of the demonstrators and Iran experienced the first of three days of calls for a general strike. According to several non-governmental organizations, Kurdistan, the province where the young Mahsa Amini was born and buried, killed by this control body on September 16, was again the place where the largest monitoring was recorded.

Despite the lack of leadership, the protests under the slogan “woman, life, freedom” are not stopping and have already won their first moral victory, a victory for which they paid with the lives of more than 200 people, according to government data. .

There is no official confirmation from the Ministry of the Interior, responsible for the ‘orientation patrols’ (Gasht-e Ershad, in Farsi), but Montazeri’s announcement was confirmed by the spokesperson for the ‘Bureau for the Promotion of Goods and the Prohibition of Goods Evil’, the body responsible for determining and enforcing proper behavior patterns in Iranian society. In statements to the local Jamaran news channel, Ali Khan Mohamadi stated that “all ‘orientation patrols’ missions have ended” and announced that they are working from his office to adopt “more modern methods” to enforce the law that mandates the use of the hijab. Mohamadi argued that they “seek an atmosphere that is not one-sided”, although at no point did he open the door to dialogue with those protesting in the streets.

Iranian journalists such as Kiam Sharifi, linked to the BBC channel, assured that from now on “the morality police may change its ways, but it will somehow remain active as it has been since the birth of the Islamic Republic.” .”

The mobilizations continue and after three months the Iranians now know that Amini’s death was not in vain. Discussion about the Morality Police, which was already open before the protests between the conservative and moderate sectors of the regime, has accelerated the decision to suspend patrols and explore new ways to enforce the use of the veil. The authorities would like it to be voluntary on the part of women, but an important part of society, especially in cities, has not shared the imposition of a dress code for years.
