The authorities had initially rejected the stowaways’ three requests
The Spanish government has decided to grant asylum to two of the three Nigerian stowaways who arrived in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on November 28, hiding in the helm of an oil tanker after eleven days of a painful journey. Authorities, who had originally decided to reject the stowaways’ petition, changed their mind on Monday by submitting the case for re-examination.
The government delegation in the Canary Islands and the Spanish Commission for Aid to Refugees (CEAR), a humanitarian organization that legally represents two of the stowaways, pointed out that the first refusal had been given to the two young people who had been fired first. The third, whose asylum application was also rejected, is expected to be notified of the outcome of the reassessment of his case in the coming hours.
The stowaways left Lagos, the Nigerian capital, on November 17 aboard the Maltese-flagged tanker ‘Alithini II’. On arrival in the Canary Islands, they had to be rescued and hospitalized due to hypothermia, fatigue and dehydration.
