About two months after a series of attacks with multiple letter bombs in Spain, a suspect has been arrested. It concerns a 74-year-old man who was arrested in northern Spain, detectives said on Wednesday.
Several shipments of explosives were sent to Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and the embassies of the US and Ukraine, among others. A defense company whose products were supplied to Ukraine, as well as Defense Minister Margarita Robles and the EU Satellite Center at Torrejon Air Force Base each had one of these letter bombs receive. Authorities suspected a connection to the war in Ukraine.
Russian right-wing extremists targeted
Just a few days ago, the “New York Times” reported suspicions that the Russian secret service had approached members of militant Russian groups with members in Western Europe to encourage them to carry out attacks. It is said that the Russian imperial movement has received particular attention.
This ultra-nationalist movement, which reportedly has training camps in St. Petersburg and Moscow and also has contacts with the far-right scene in Western Europe, was founded in 2002. The self-proclaimed goal of the group is the reconquest of former Soviet territories to establish a Russian to become wealthy. The United States has listed the movement as a terrorist organization and, according to the New York Times report, suspects the letter bombs were “warning shots” against the West or a test of the capabilities of covert warfare.
Little information about the detainees
It is still unclear whether the 74-year-old who has now been arrested is actually an ally of the movement of the Russian Empire. Nothing is known about the identity of the man.
According to the media, citing the police, the programs contain self-made mechanisms with a relatively small amount of pyrotechnic material and small metal balls. Only one shipment exploded. An employee of the Ukrainian embassy was injured in the hand.
