Woman (72) in hospital – apartment on fire due to candles and nativity scene

Date:

Fire alarm on Tuesday evening in an apartment in Fulpmes in Tyrol! A nativity scene caught fire from candles. The resident – a 72-year-old woman – had to be taken to hospital with suspected smoke inhalation.

At around 6:40 p.m., the 72-year-old lit some candles in the living room of her ground-floor apartment in Fulpmes, which she’d placed next to a small nativity scene. “The woman then left the living room to prepare for a planned visit in the kitchen,” police said.

Carpet immediately ignited
After a short time, the woman from Stubai noticed a burning smell. When she went to look, the whole crib was already on fire. “The woman, with presence of mind, wanted to carry the burning cradle out through the patio door. However, when she opened the sliding door, the crib slipped and fell to the floor, immediately igniting the carpet there,” the director said.

Daughter and grandson were unharmed
As a result, the pensioner fled the apartment and called her daughter, who lived one floor above. The Fulpmes and Neustift fire brigades, which arrived shortly before 7 p.m., were able to quickly extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading further.

Significant material damage
“The 72-year-old was taken to the district hospital in Hall in Tyrol for further clarification on suspicion of smoke poisoning,” officials said. The daughter and her two children were able to leave the house in time and were not injured. “The material damage caused by the fire is significant, but cannot be quantified at this time,” police said.
