Sri Lanka has restricted the dispensing of petrol and diesel at petrol stations amid ongoing protests after long lines at petrol pumps. The island nation has no money to import fuel from abroad.
State oil and gas company Ceylon Petroleum Corporation announced Friday that cars in Sri Lanka can only fill 20 liters and motorcycles with four liters. Long queues are currently building up at the pumps. Also, many gas stations are completely closed due to lack of fuel.
In addition to petrol and diesel, there is a shortage of food and medicines. Sri Lanka is heavily indebted and has no financial means for imports from abroad. According to the cabinet, the high debts will not be repaid for the time being. Instead, attempts are being made to restructure them. There are talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington next week. The country also hopes for more financial aid from China and India.
Demanding replacement of the president
Sri Lanka is currently in the midst of its worst economic crisis in decades. In the country of about 22 million people, many are already calling for the replacement of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. The two are brothers.
