In protest against the Gaza war and especially against the Italian government’s support for Israel, about a hundred people stormed the headquarters of the Italian arms company Leonardo in Turin on Wednesday.
The students, who unfurled a flag for Palestinian territories on the roof of Leonardo’s office, claimed the company was supporting Israel by remotely providing technical assistance and spare parts to the Israeli air force. Leonardo did not comment on the protest.
“No weapons for Israel”
Photos released by the students show them waving Palestinian flags in Leonardo’s offices. They carried banners reading “No weapons for Israel” and accused the company of complicity in genocide. They also climbed into a plane on the grounds of the company’s headquarters. After the protest dispersed, thirty demonstrators were identified by police. Police officers now guard the weapons company’s headquarters.
Defense Minister Guido Crosetto condemned the protest on the short messaging platform “These people must be treated for what they are: dangerous subversives,” Crosetto said.
Arms exports to warring countries prohibited
Through its American subsidiary, Leonardo supplies aircraft to Israel and owns an Israeli radar company called RADA. Under Italian law, arms exports to warring countries and countries that violate human rights are prohibited.
The Italian arms company is also a supplier to the armed forces, which has ordered 36 multi-purpose helicopters, six of which have already been delivered.
