On the evening of December 6, several youths behaved extremely aggressively during a Krampus run in St. Johann (Salzburg’s Pongau). They were acts of violence with consequences.
Aggressive behavior of the Krampuses towards visitors was a thing of the past, but now the violence seems to be going the other way. Just like on Sinterklaas evening in St. Johann im Pongau. Several youths and younger adults behaved extremely aggressively towards the traditional figures, but also attacked the event’s visitors.
But it didn’t stop there. The violent youths even attacked the police who had arrived. The agents then arrested three Pongauers aged 16 to 18 and a 20-year-old Bosnian. All four were shown. Their friends – two other Pongauers (19 and 21) – tried to free them and thwart the police. They were arrested for attempting to resist the authorities. Both refused to testify and were set free at the Salzburg public prosecutor’s office.
