A 23-year-old man has been executed in Iran for allegedly wounding a guard during a demonstration. It is the first death sentence to be carried out in connection with the nationwide protests. Earlier, the Supreme Court had rejected the appeal of Defendant Mohsen Shekari. The reason: the young man committed a “war crime against God” with his protest.
Since a young woman died in police custody in Iran in mid-September, protests in the Islamic state have not stopped. Mohsen Shekari also took to the streets to demonstrate against the regime – for which he now had to pay with his life. He was hanged early in the morning.
The young man was apprehended at a roadblock at the end of September. He allegedly injured a member of the paramilitary Basij militia with a machete, Iran’s Mizan news agency reported. He was sentenced before Tehran’s Revolutionary Court, where cases are usually heard behind closed doors, which has drawn international criticism.
Dozens more executions are feared
Shekari was arrested on September 25 and sentenced on November 20. Human rights activists spoke of a “show trial”. Many other prisoners arrested during the demonstrations suffer the same fate. Activists warn that at least 12 more people could be executed in the coming days and weeks – they too have been sentenced to death.
