Attention skiers and tourers! There is currently a considerable avalanche risk in many places in western Austria. Especially above 2200 meters, winter sports enthusiasts and alpinists “already have to deal with a very unfavorable situation”, according to the Tyrolean avalanche warning service on Thursday.
It is particularly dangerous in the more snowy areas – including the regions along the main alpine ridge. “This is confirmed not only by stability studies, but also by a number of avalanches involving humans. All avalanches have so far had no consequences,” emphasizes the Tyrolean avalanche warner.
Wind is the master builder of avalanches
The decisive factor for the recent avalanche eruption was not so much the amount of fresh snow as the strong influence of wind from varying directions. “Only in this way can thicker snowdrift packs be formed as a precondition for slab avalanches,” it said.
Extra caution also in Vorarlberg
Colleagues on the Vorarlberg side of the Arlberg also warned during the holiday: “There are dangerous places above 2200 meters on very steep shady slopes.”
The situation remains the same for now
According to the avalanche warning service for Vorarlberg, only small slides and small sliding snow avalanches on steep grassy slopes at lower altitudes are spontaneous. On the other hand, individual skiers can cause small slab avalanches, and sometimes medium slab avalanches as sea levels rise. This should be taken into account for activities outside secured areas.
In view of the weather forecast, the avalanche risk will not change significantly for the time being.
