Born into a monarchy – the oldest Upper Austrian celebrated her 111th birthday

Date:

Born in Mühlviertel, Stefanie Kürner was born into the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. She celebrated her birthday on Wednesday. Among the benefactors was Governor Thomas Stelzer, who personally dropped by and brought gifts.

When Stefanie Kürner was born on December 7, 1911 in St. Peter am Wimberg, Emperor Franz Joseph still ruled Austria-Hungary. In the same year, the Titanic was launched in Belfast, Northern Ireland. And in the Peruvian Andes, the ruins of the legendary Inca city of Machu Picchu were discovered.

waitress and cook
Kürner (maiden name Sunzenauer) grew up with six siblings on a farm during World War I. At the age of 16 she left the parental home and initially worked as a waitress in Linz. During World War II, she worked as a maternity nurse and later as a cook in the canteen of the Linz town hall, a kindergarten and in the trade union center in Bad Aussee.

marriage at 50
There she met her husband, whom she married at the age of 50. The couple, who traveled extensively – including to France, the Spanish islands and Ecuador, got 30 years together. Unfortunately, there were no children together.

Kürner has been living in a Caritas dormitory in Linz for nine years. There she also received a visit from Governor Thomas Stelzer on Wednesday, who brought her a bouquet of flowers and a Sachertorte. “I am satisfied,” emphasized the jubilee when asked about her well-being.

Muhlviertel roots
Kürner was pleased that Stelzer’s grandfather also came from St. Peter/Wimberg. She explained to him that, strictly speaking, she had grown up in the village of Teufelsberg. To which the father of the country replied with a smile: “Is it possible that an angel like you comes from a Teufelsberg?”
