Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was seriously injured in an assassination attempt, has spoken out publicly for the first time since the attack. On Wednesday, a Facebook video went viral in which Fico said he “forgave” the attacker who shot him four times.
He also announced that he would gradually resume his official duties from the end of June. Fico was released from the hospital at the end of May and is now continuing his recovery at home from the attack.
Fico was shot and seriously injured on May 15 after a cabinet meeting in the small town of Handlova. The head of government had to undergo surgery twice. The suspected killer, 71-year-old amateur writer Juraj Cintula, was arrested at the scene. He is in custody. He is being investigated for attempted murder.
He wanted to ensure that Fico ‘could no longer work’.
During the police interrogation, Cintula stated that he committed the crime out of hatred for Fico and his government policies. He did not agree with the judicial and media policy of the left-wing populist prime minister. He did not want to kill Fico, but to make him ‘medically unfit to continue his work’.
