Drama at the Goldwörther bathing lake (Upper Austria). A 19-year-old from Linz wanted to swim to a platform at the lake. But halfway through he had problems and suddenly went under. His parents and friends who were on the coast tried everything to save the young man – in vain.
Six Iranians from Linz, including a 19-year-old, went to the Goldwörther swimming lake on Saturday to spend a fun day there. There they established their place on the south-west side of the lake; they wanted to camp there.
I wanted to get a swimming island
There is a swimming island approximately in the middle of the lake. The 19-year-old wanted to take them to the shore so that the family members could climb onto the swimming island. He climbed up and loosened the anchor, because the island was tied to the bottom of the lake with a larger rock and a rope. The 19-year-old lifted the stone onto the island and then tried to push it while swimming.
Rope tied around the waist
However, the young man could not do that and swam back to shore. There he asked for the tow rope so he could pull the island with it. His 38-year-old mother brought him the rope from the car. Around 8 p.m. he tied it around his waist, went back into the water and swam towards the swimming island.
About twenty feet from shore he called for help and then suddenly went underwater. His 45-year-old father and a 37-year-old tried to reach him, but were unsuccessful. The 19-year-old was only rescued dead by fire brigade divers.
