More than 1,000 victims – Illegal Hajj pilgrimages are a death sentence

Date:

After the death of hundreds of worshipers during the Islamic Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, Egypt is taking action against tourist companies. Prime Minister Mustafa Madbuli has ordered the cancellation of the permits of 16 companies for organizing illegal pilgrimages. In addition, their managers were transferred to the prosecutor’s office.

More than a thousand people did not survive the hajj that ended this week in the scorching heat of Saudi Arabia. 658 of the deceased were from Egypt, of whom 630 were not officially registered.

Many without an official pilgrim permit
The pilgrimage should be undertaken at least once in a lifetime by every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it. Many believers participate in the hajj without the official pilgrim permit for financial reasons and are therefore not registered by the Saudi Arabian authorities.

In the run-up to the hajj, Saudi Arabian authorities said they had expelled hundreds of thousands of unregistered pilgrims from Mecca – many of whom were apparently still participating in the hajj, which began on June 14.

Temperatures up to 51 degrees
These unregistered pilgrims in particular were exposed to temperatures above 51 degrees. Without permits, they were excluded from cold rooms set up by authorities for the 1.8 million permitted pilgrims to recover from hours of walking and praying in the open.

In Tunisia, the minister of religion was fired on Friday after the deaths of 49 Tunisian pilgrims.
