Local news agencies initially pointed to arson, but later cited sources denying an intentional act and pointing to violations of safety regulations.
A large “7,000 square meter” fire that destroyed a shopping center in a suburb north of Moscow killed one person this Friday. “In the Moscow region, firefighters are extinguishing a fire covering an area of 7,000 square meters,” an area comparable to a football field, Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry said on Telegram. The fire broke out at the Mega Khimki shopping mall in the suburb of Khimki, north of the Russian capital and near Sheremetievo airport, he said. Local news agencies initially pointed to an arson attack, but later cited sources denying an intentional act and pointing to violations of safety regulations.
Firefighters deployed 70 men and 20 trucks to extinguish the blaze, emergency services said, adding that the design of the building made work difficult. “Due to the collapse of the roof, the fire immediately spread over a large area,” the emergency service of the Moscow region said on Telegram.
Videos posted to social media show a massive blaze and people fleeing the burning building into the parking lot.
