It was a fight against fire and ice! In Scharnstein, Upper Austria, a commercial building burned down on Friday night. The freezing temperatures turned the site into an ice rink.
The water from the fire, which flowed in all directions, froze within minutes and made the scene slippery – an additional danger for the firefighters who were alerted at 12:30 am.
When the first helpers arrived in the village of Mühldorf in Scharnstein, most of the roof truss was already on fire and alarm level 2 was declared. In the end, eleven fire brigades with about 120 men were deployed.
The family that lives in the house where a painting hangs managed to get themselves to safety. Firefighters used two aerial ladders and several teams of breathing apparatus to contain the blaze.
And many helpers were also deployed to fight the ice, which had formed quickly at minus five degrees. Salt was used to try to keep the paths more or less rough.
The fire is now under control, but the operation will last until 12:00 p.m. According to initial information, no one was injured and the damage to the building from fire and water from the fire is enormous.
