The Minister of Tourism, Javier Hurtado, also announced during his performance the preparation of a new Tourism Law and the approval of the Sectoral Territorial Plan for Tourist Resources, to explain the lines of action of his department.
The Minister of Tourism, Trade and Consumption of the Basque Government, Javier Hurtadohas committed to presenting within six months a proposal agreed with the Ministry of Finance and the rest of the institutions to levy a tourist tax in the Basque Autonomous Community. In addition, it has announced the preparation of a new Tourism Law and the approval of the Territorial Sector Plan for Tourist Resources.
“The conditions are there to introduce a tax on tourist accommodation,” the councillor defended in the parliamentary committee where he outlined the main actions of his department for the next four years.
“It is fair that everyone who comes to enjoy Euskadi also contributes to the improvement of Euskadi,” said Hurtado, who explained that this tax is not intended to “reduce the influx of tourists”, but rather to improve Euskadi as a destination and spend the money on elevated to “tourism policies with an impact on the municipalities and on the quality of life of the citizens”.
The advisor also announced the preparation of a new Tourism Act which will include concepts such as “awareness of tourism sustainability”, will evolve towards inclusive and accessible tourism and will include the Code of Ethics for Tourism.
In this legislature the Territorial sectoral plan for tourist resources which aims to “create a tourist ecosystem that strengthens the sustainable tourism model in the long term.” This plan could also be “an additional instrument in the control” of housing for tourist use, he stressed.
As for the tourist apartmentsHurtado has said that in Euskadi, housing for tourist use represents 0.4% of the total, “well below the national average of 1.33%”, but the Basque government wants to prevent residential buildings from becoming tourist buildings, because “housing is a right.
