A leak in a pipeline in the United States is said to have spilled more than two million liters of oil. Canadian operator TC Energy said Friday (local time) that the oil spill from the Keystone pipeline in the US state of Kansas had been contained. Activists say this would be the biggest disaster in the United States since 2013 if estimates of up to 2.2 million gallons of crude oil are confirmed.
The hole in the pipeline was discovered on Wednesday and oil, among other things, flowed into a river. TC Energy immediately shut down the pipeline. According to the environmental protection authorities, the cause was further investigated on Friday. To prevent environmental pollution, among other things, an earth bank was heaped up in the affected river.
Biden rejected the oil pipeline expansion project
The pipeline transports crude oil from Canada to the US, where it is processed into fuel and other oil products. Oil companies and environmentalists have long debated expanding the oil pipeline known as the Keystone XL. US President Joe Biden rejected the expansion project shortly after his inauguration in January 2021.
