Kidnapped by father – Dutch woman found 18 years after kidnapping

Date:

A Dutch woman who was abducted to Libya 18 years ago by her father as a three-year-old girl has been tracked down there thanks to the efforts of a retired police detective. However, the 21-year-old woman no longer wants contact with relatives in the Netherlands, the former police officer, who was assisted by a colleague, reported to broadcaster RTV Oost on Saturday.

The father is said to have killed his ex-partner and then fled headlong with their daughter to his homeland. Since then, the little girl’s grandparents had not given up hope for a sign of life.

In their spare time, the two police officers had tried to track down the girl. According to the report, this was ultimately successful through an intermediary in Libya, who was able to meet the young woman after a phone call with her father in the capital Tripoli.

Father cannot be tried in the Netherlands
Since Libya has no extradition agreement with the Netherlands, the father, who is still wanted, has not yet been taken to court there. Because Libya still applies the death penalty, the Netherlands has not sought to have the father prosecuted by the judiciary in his home country, the report said.
