Message to politicians – experts: “Don’t wait until your hat is on fire”

Date:

Nobody knows exactly which Corona technology awaits us in the autumn – but experts are demanding – unlike the past two years – a plan from the government.

The urgently needed breathing space for the workers – “we don’t see them yet,” says Elisabeth Potzmann, president of the Austrian Health and Nursing Association. Who is on the same wave as epidemiologist Gerald Gartlehner and simulation researcher Niki Popper: “Don’t wait until your hat is on fire” is the message to politicians.

push for health care reform
Although it is not clear which scenario to prepare for, if Omikron remains dominant, the coronavirus can probably be treated like the flu. When mutations occur, “everything is possible again,” as Gartlehner puts it. “In the worst case, we will get a lot of infections and a lot of deposits in hospitals in the autumn, just like last year.” You have to prepare for that, Potzmann insists, not pushing for a health care reform for the first time.

There are no signs of serious vaccination campaigns
“In the meantime, it hardly matters what you start with, but the employees should finally notice that something is happening.” Frustration and fatigue are very pronounced, some locations cannot fill the training places and the dropout rate, which is already high, has increased again. “The fact that there are no signs of a serious vaccination campaign in the summer” irritates her, the extension of the Green Pass was just a capitulation to the circumstances.

In Gartlehner’s view, masks in schools could be completely abolished after Easter, as the obligation to wear masks no longer provides additional benefits in view of the private gatherings.
