Fatal accident – 15-year-old fell under a double-decker bus in Berlin

Date:

A 15-year-old pedestrian has died in a serious accident involving a double-decker bus in Berlin. The teen was trapped under the vehicle and could only be found dead. According to rescuers, another young person was seriously injured on Saturday evening when the bus hit them both.

According to the fire service, a so-called rescue vehicle was deployed to rescue the youths under the bus, which raised the vehicle using hydraulic devices. Official information about the injured was initially unavailable. According to rescuers, it should also be a teenager. She was taken to hospital, as was the bus driver.

The accident happened around 6:45 p.m. on Leonorenstrasse in the Lankwitz district of the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district. The police could not provide any information about the exact course of events and the cause in the evening. Police officers investigated the scene and questioned witnesses. According to rescuers, there is a traffic light for pedestrians near the scene of the accident.

Rescue in Berlin overloaded: helpers only arrived after 20 minutes
After the accident, the police and rescuers came into action. The fire department alone sent some 40 emergency services and several rescue and special vehicles. A helicopter was also on site. Nine minutes after the emergency call, the first vehicles were on site, but the first ambulance only arrived after 20 minutes, according to a spokesperson for the fire service. The rescue service in Berlin has been heavily overloaded for some time, partly because there is a shortage of personnel and there are many emergency calls that do not relate to real calamities.

According to the police, several pastors were called to the scene because there were many witnesses to the accident. An additional vehicle was made available for this purpose. A police chaplain also took care of the emergency services, which also have to process the terrible images. It was initially unclear how many people were on the M82 bus.

Many spectators at the scene of the accident
According to a police spokesperson, “a large number of spectators” gathered at the scene of the accident during the rescue operation. Disabilities caused by the so-called Gaffer were not known. The Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) was shocked by the fatal bus accident. “We are deeply affected,” a spokesman for the municipal company said in the evening of the German news agency. “Our thoughts are with the families of those involved in the accident.”
