After crowded trains – More passengers reserve seats

Date:

After hundreds of travelers had to leave the crowded trains on Wednesday and Thursday, more and more are now reserving a seat. The ÖBB recommends a reservation especially for Sundays and, if necessary, already in the afternoon, not only driving in the evening.

The reason is that the Austrian railways expect a strong return wave after the long weekend. Other reasons for the trains, which are always used intensively, are the climate ticket, high fuel prices and the desire to travel after many corona measures have ended. Single trains were only fully booked on Wednesdays and Thursdays. According to ÖBB, five trains were overcrowded on these days, prompting travelers to voluntarily get off the train. Several hundred people who wanted to travel from Vienna to Wiener Neustadt or St. Pölten in Railjets were affected. They switched to follow-up trains and regional trains.

No need for police action
In Salzburg, some visitors to the Rammstein concert in Klagenfurt had to wait for the next train because the crowds were too big. Train clearing and police operations were not needed there nor in Vienna. According to the ÖBB, they only had more service personnel at the stations.

Recently, there have been repeated reports of overcrowded ÖBB trains having to be evacuated.
A Railjet long-distance train has 410 seats. Sometimes two trains are merged, doubling that number. There is also standing room, which means that passengers who sit in the aisle are also allowed. According to the ÖBB, it is important that the train conductor comes to all safety-relevant areas.
