The Basque Coastal Fleet has caught 4,619,021 kilos until 1 May anchovies, which represents 29.37% of what is committed at the state level; and 7,944,550 kilos mackerel35.56% of the total.
The data was released today, Friday, in the deeds of the ‘Old Eguna’, held in Getaria, the town of Gipuzkoan, in which the Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment of the Basque Government, Arantxa Tapia, took part; the city’s mayor, Haritz Alberdi; the Director of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Leandro Azkue; the President of the Brotherhood of Getaria, Emeterio Urresti, and the President of the Brotherhoods of Gipuzkoa, Eugenio Elduayen.
In the case of anchovies, of the 4,619,021 kilos caught, 2,653,741 kilos were unloaded on the Basque markets, at an average price of €1.08/kilo, with a worldwide turnover of €2,869,564, while in markets outside Euskadi the Basque fleet has unloaded 1,965,280.50 kilos, at an average price of 1,91 €/kilo, with a worldwide turnover of 3,745,956.12 €.
During the entire campaign last year, the Basque fleet as a whole unloaded almost 8,112 tons of anchovies: 2,790 tons in the Euskadi guilds (44% more than in 2020) and 5,322 tons outside the Basque Country (18% more). 2020). The average selling price was € 1.55/kilo.
As for mackerel, the total number of kilograms caught by the Basque fleet until 1 May was 7,944,550 kilograms, 35.56% of what was caught at the state level. Of these, 5,380,732 were unloaded in ports in the Basque Country, at an average price of €1.41/kilo, with a worldwide turnover of €7,555,212.52, and 2,563,818 kg were unloaded outside the Basque Country, at an average price of € 1.44/kilo, with a worldwide turnover of € 3,705,314.09.
In the words of Counsel Tapia: “The development of the coastal zone so far can be described as satisfactory, from a catches point of view, and it is possible that for fat the end of May or the beginning of June we will run out of quota set for this first semester”. Fuel costs are taken into account, higher costs for the ships are assumed because they have to travel further”. To alleviate these additional costs, Tapia recalled that his ministry has enabled a line of extraordinary aid to the primary sector.
Anchovy boxes, today, in Getaria
In addition, during the presentation, the promotional campaign of the Anchovies with Eusko Label, a quality certificate launched last season to guarantee the “freshness, size and taste of the anchovies caught on our coasts by boats of the Basque fleet”.
As the ministry reports in a memorandum, only those items that are auctioned in the ports of Euskadi and that exceed the minimum established size and meet the quality requirements will receive the Eusko label. They must have been fished by authorized vessels of the Basque Country fleet engaged in inshore fishing with traditional fishing gear. Anchovies with the Eusko label are distinguished by a numbered label that identifies the boxes, on which the day and port of sale appear.
