Transporting a Christmas tree is not really a science, but you should at least give it some thought, as this video shows. Here, a man ties his fir tree to his BMW X5 – making a crucial mistake in the process that has left the internet masses stunned.
We love TikTok and social media in general for such movies. Can’t he? For real? Oh my God! In the end, the man finds a creative solution, but judge for yourself!
And how are you doing better? Tips for transporting the Christmas tree:
On the car roof: When transporting on the roof, the tree must remain in the net and secured with the tree tip pointing backwards to the front and rear of the luggage carrier with wide, durable textile straps with metal fasteners – rubber straps are not suitable. If the load extends more than one meter beyond the length of the vehicle, this must be marked with an appropriate sign. In the dark or at twilight, additional lighting and reflectors are required so that the load can be clearly identified. “The width of the vehicle can be exceeded by 8 inches on each side due to the tree, not counting the rear-view mirrors,” says Pronebner.
In the car: When transporting in the vehicle, the boom must be properly lashed and stored perpendicular to the direction of travel. “It is important that drivers can still see well – they must have a clear view to the front and to the side or in the rear-view mirror,” warns ÖAMTC lawyer Verena Pronebner. “If the rear window is covered, there should at least be good visibility through the two side mirrors.” The handbrake, gear lever and controls must be easy to operate. If the tailgate is left open during transport, make sure that the rear lights and turn signals remain visible and that the license plate is legible. The tailgate must in any case be tensioned downwards, preferably with textile straps.
With the cargo bike: The following also applies to transport by cargo bike, which is becoming increasingly popular: safety first. “It is important that the tree does not obstruct the cyclist’s view and does not become independent. So make sure that you also properly attach the Christmas tree to the cargo bike,” says the expert. “Should damage occur during transport, for example to parked vehicles, this is usually covered by the cyclist’s liability insurance.”
Please note: “Like any load in or on the vehicle, a Christmas tree must also be properly secured. Otherwise, fines of up to 5,000 euros can be imposed,” the lawyer warns. “If other road users are endangered, for example because a poorly secured tree falls on the road, this can even be noted in the driving license register.”
Then rather a video on TikTok.
