Brain hemorrhage – Markus has forgotten the names of his three sons

Date:

A cerebral hemorrhage nearly killed 45-year-old Mühlviertler. After three operations, there is now a fist-sized hole in the top of his skull. The road back is difficult for him and his family.

It happened this year on June 17: 45-year-old Markus was at a rehearsal for the music club in his hometown in the Rohrbach district. There the flugelhorn complained of a severe headache that became so unbearable that he went home early and went to bed. He explained to his wife Claudia that suddenly he could no longer see anything. “Then he just talked confused,” said the 38-year-old, who immediately raised the alarm via an emergency call.

The brain pressure increased enormously
Just nine minutes later, a helicopter crew arrived to take the father of three to the hospital of the Brothers of Mercy in Linz. “If the rescue chain hadn’t worked like this, Markus would be dead,” says Claudia. Due to the patient’s extremely critical condition – his intracranial pressure was increasing more and more – the 45-year-old had to be transferred to the Neuromed campus and his head opened. “He had a cerebral hemorrhage that had to be sucked out urgently,” the wife explains.

meningitis
A specialized team of microsurgeons and neurologists managed to save the life of the warehouse worker in an operation that lasted hours. Tragically, a germ was transmitted during the surgery, resulting in meningitis. “During two more operations, pus had to be removed from his head.” Markus was in the hospital for eleven weeks and then went to rehab.

can’t talk anymore
He has been cared for at home since October. “Markus isn’t like he used to be. He can’t talk, can only see with one eye, his right hand is numb and 95 percent of his memories are gone. He no longer knows what everyday objects are for, nor does he know the names of our three sons.”

The warehouse worker is currently missing a palm-sized portion of the skullcap, which could not be used due to the ignition. “Now we have to be extremely careful that he doesn’t fall. He wears a helmet for protection.”

Expensive therapies
Markus needs constant supervision and care. With the help of therapists, constant attempts are made to improve his condition. “The first year is crucial for the healing process,” Claudia emphasizes. The financial situation for the family is now extremely tense. “I would so much like to enable him to have good doctors of his choice and therapists of his choice. He also has to rehab, which costs a lot of money,” says Claudia, who has hardly slept a wink for months out of concern for her husband and children (11, 14, 15): “It’s a luxury if I can sleep six hours the whole through the night.”
