A drunkard tried to loot an ATM in Lower Austria with a chisel and a plasterer’s knife. But the 22-year-old failed miserably — even filming it on his cell phone. He had been arrested.
Shortly after midnight on Saturday, the alarm bells literally went off at the police: the security system of a bank branch on Blindenmarkt in the Melk district was activated. It was suspected that another professional gang had tried to blow up an ATM or remove it from its anchorage.
Drunk and injured
A large number of executives immediately rushed to the bank. But on site, even the experienced officials could hardly believe their eyes. A 22-year-old man was found nearby, visibly intoxicated and with bleeding hands. Since a chisel and a plasterer’s ax were found in the bank, the investigators immediately combined: The Romanian who lives nearby may have tried to break open the ATM and the lock of the vault door, injuring himself. The screen was also badly damaged.
The drunkard, who measured around one per mille, carried proof of this: he had filmed himself with his mobile phone.
No motive
The man was then arrested and taken to St. Pölten Prison. He could not name a motive, it must have been pure drunkenness. “At least it’s not a big fish,” say researchers.
