Victory for the Democrats – The US state of Ohio enshrines abortion rights

Date:

Did the Republicans make a mistake? After fierce political battles, the right to abortion has been enshrined in the constitution of another American state. Joe Biden speaks of a victory for democracy.

In a referendum in Ohio on Tuesday, a majority of voters supported the law, CNN, NBC, ABC and CBS reported, citing vote counts and forecasts. There had previously been similar referendums in Michigan, California and Vermont, which also favored abortion advocates.

US President Joe Biden reacted happily to the decision. The people of Ohio “voted to protect their basic freedoms – and democracy won.”

Moving forward, the right to abortion in Ohio will be constitutionally protected until the fetus is viable — that is, until about 24 weeks of pregnancy — and thereafter if the mother’s life is in danger. The constitutional amendment will eliminate more restrictive bills in the state.

The Supreme Court’s decision caused chaos
In June of last year, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the right to abortion, which was previously constitutionally protected across the country. Since then, sovereignty over legislation has once again rested with the individual states. A legal patchwork has emerged: strict restrictions apply in many places. Abortion is effectively banned in fourteen states.

The Republican Party’s influential religious right in particular has focused on this issue in the recent past. If they had their way, the right to abortion would be completely abolished. Political observers say they have clearly overstepped their bounds.

Polls show that a majority of people in the US support limited abortion rights. A year before the presidential elections, the issue is already occupying several election campaigns at the federal level.
