On Friday afternoon, a vehicle caught fire on the Rhine Valley highway near Bregenz near Lauterach. The result was a traffic jam of more than ten kilometers towards Germany.
Everything happened very quickly: around 2 p.m., a 46-year-old motorist suddenly saw the oil warning light flashing and a few seconds later smoke was already pouring from the rear area. With his presence of mind, he parked his car on the hard shoulder and got out. Fortunately, shortly afterwards the entire vehicle was on fire and the burning fuel spread across the road.
Road closed for several hours
The emergency services of the Dornbirn fire brigade were able to quickly extinguish the car, but nothing could be saved. For the cleaning and rescue work, two of the three lanes had to be closed until 4:30 p.m. – the result was a delay of eleven kilometers towards Hohenems. No one was injured.
