According to Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov, the Ukrainian armed forces will soon resume their counter-offensive against the Russian occupiers. We are still waiting for favorable weather: as soon as the ground becomes firmer due to the approaching frost, attacks with heavy tanks and artillery can continue.
The current transition “from dry autumn to not yet frosty winter” does not provide favorable operating conditions for both wheeled and tracked vehicles, Minister Resnikov said on Sunday during a meeting with his Swedish counterpart Pål Jonson in Odessa. The current “decline in activity at the front is due to the weather,” said Reznikov, who reiterated that “the Ukrainian armed forces are not thinking of stopping”.
Attacks with Luftwaffe and artillery
Airstrikes against targets in the Russian-occupied areas of the country were already carried out this weekend, as confirmed by the Ukrainian General Staff. At the same time, a number of command posts, accommodation and supply camps have been fired on with barrel and rocket artillery since Saturday night, it said. The exact goals were not mentioned. However, the Russian air force also carried out several attacks on Sunday.
The Russian side reported attacks on the occupied city of Melitopol. Air defense systems destroyed two Ukrainian missiles, Yevgeny Balitsky, the Russian-appointed governor of the occupied part of the Zaporizhia region, told Telegram. Four missiles would have reached their target. A recreation center was destroyed in the Ukrainian attack with HIMARS missiles. However, according to media reports, the center served as a base for Russian soldiers.
Power outage in port city of Odessa
The situation in the port city of Odessa and other regions is difficult due to the targeted Russian attacks on the Ukrainian electricity grid, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. “We are doing everything we can to restore light to Odessa,” Zelenskyy said in his daily video address on Sunday evening (see video above). “We are doing everything we can to get the most out of the Russian goals under these circumstances.”
Russian forces attacked Odessa on Saturday evening with a wave of Iranian combat drones, knocking the city and the entire surrounding area out of power. According to the official statement, the power outage, which affects several hundred thousand people, can only be fixed with great difficulty. The regional power company said repairs could take up to two months.
Total blackout possible
Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on German television that given Russia’s continued attacks on infrastructure facilities in Ukraine, he believes a general blackout, i.e. a collapse of electricity supply, is possible in his country.
Meanwhile, Russian forces have attacked the Kherson region 45 times in the past day, Ukrinform news agency reports. Authorities say two civilians were killed and five injured. In the town of Kadiivka in the Luhansk region, an explosion occurred on Sunday at a hotel believed to be the headquarters of the Russian mercenary group Wagner. According to the head of the military administration of the Luhansk region, Serhiy Haidai, many Wagner mercenaries were killed. The number of enemy casualties is very high, Haidai stressed on Telegram.
