A 57-year-old man shot dead three women and seriously injured four others in a cafe in Rome on Sunday. Two of the victims were in life-threatening condition. Among the dead is a close friend of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The motive for the act is said to have been an argument with the residents of an apartment building.
“Nicoletta was a protective mother, a sincere and discreet friend, a strong and at the same time vulnerable woman,” the right-wing populist politician wrote on Facebook (post below) and posted a photo showing her and the victim. Nicoletta Golisano, 50, mother of a ten-year-old boy, has been friends with Meloni for several years. The perpetrator was subsequently arrested.
The man took a gun out of his pocket during a meeting of owners. “He came in, closed the door and yelled, ‘I’ll kill you all!’ and started shooting,” a witness told ANSA news agency. The 57-year-old has repeatedly argued with neighbors in the past, another witness told Rai News TV.
The perpetrator had applied for a gun license several times in the past, but the authorities had denied him. The gun used to kill the three women was allegedly retrieved from a shooting range by the man.
Quarrel with neighbors as motive for the crime
The meeting would have been a meeting of the residents of the house where the perpetrator lives. As he explained on his blog in November, he has a difficult relationship with them and accuses them of trying to evict them from his apartment. The shooting shocked the Italian public.
