In the night of Sunday, a fire broke out in the geriatric station in the Marienkrankenhaus in Hamburg. Three patients died, more than 50 were injured. The fire brigade was able to save many other people out of the window.
All the dead are adults, said a fire brigade spokesperson on Sunday morning. Moreover, there would be two life -threatening people and 16 seriously injured. Parts of the hospital in the North German Hanseatic City had to be evacuated in one of the clinic buildings because of the fire.
The injured patients were partially cared for in the first aid of the clinic or brought to the surrounding hospitals. The rescue measures are now completed, the fire was removed, the spokesperson said in the early morning.
Fire broke out in geriatrics
The fire broke out on the ground floor of the clinic in a room on the geriatric station, which specializes in the care of older patients on the ground floor of the clinic. Then the flames destroyed the first floor. According to a DPA reporter on site, a room from the clinic is apparently completely burned out. The full extent of material damage was initially unclear.
The smoke caused by the fire on the ground floor was drawn on all four floors of the affected building, said the fire brigade spokesperson. The adjacent buildings were also checked and patients who were housed there were investigated.
People stored over windows
The fire brigade was on site with a large contingent of around 160 emergency services. The affected people were saved through air ladders, portable ladders and through the corridors with such a driven escape hoods. “There were several people on the windows, that is, patients who called for help,” said the spokesperson for the fire brigade. The fire was removed after about 20 minutes.
According to its own statements, the Marienkrankenhaus is one of the largest denomination hospital in North Germany. It has around 600 beds and treats around 93,000 patients every year.
