At least three people were killed and eighteen others injured in an attack on a hotel in Kabul on Monday. According to a police spokesman, the dead are the attackers. Eyewitnesses reported a “very loud explosion” and “a lot of shots”.
A police spokesman said the attack was carried out by “malicious elements”. A suspect has already been arrested. Smoke rose as security forces arrived at the multi-storey Kabul Logan Hotel. The place was cordoned off, the hotel guests were taken to safety. The Italian aid organization Emergency wrote on Twitter that 18 people were being treated in hospitals. “Two foreign guests were injured when they jumped from an upper floor,” said Taliban spokesman Sabihullah Mujahid.
Hotel popular with Chinese business people
Eyewitnesses reported a “very loud explosion” and “a lot of shots”. Flames erupted from part of the building; thick plumes of smoke rose. There was a helicopter in action. The stricken Kabul Logan Hotel has been particularly popular with Chinese business people visiting their neighboring country of Afghanistan since the radical Islamic Taliban returned to power. Although Beijing does not officially recognize the Taliban government, it has kept its embassy open.
attacks are increasing
Initially, no one claimed responsibility for the attack. Although the Taliban have declared an improved security situation one of their goals, attacks have increased in recent months. Behind this is often the jihadist militia “Islamic State” (IS). In early December, several suspected attacks shook the Afghan capital.
