After two days of negotiations, the European Union’s fisheries ministers have reached an agreement on fishing quotas for 2023.

After two days of intense negotiations, the fisheries ministers of the European Union have reached an agreement on fishing quotas for 2023 in the Atlantic and Mediterranean.
The quota of hake will increase by 10% after eight years of austerity. Spain doubles its quota for 2022 with a global amount increasing to 9,953 tonnes by 2023. Also the quota of mackerel have registered an increase of 20%, bringing Spain 29,439 tons of this species.
The quota of snuff from zone VII was up 11% and out rooster from zone VII, 14%.
On the other hand, the catch quota of the sole compared to the 11% reduction proposed by the European Commission.
On the contrary, they have agreed to reduce the catch mackerel from 70,000 to 3,200 tons. Initially, the European Commission increased a zero quota for horse mackerel fisheries because of the poor situation of the species.
As far as the negotiations with the United Kingdom are concerned, the agreement has not yet been concluded, although with regard to the niceSpain has obtained permits for the first time to access British waters.
Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Minister Luis Planas celebrated the agreement reached by ministers this Tuesday after a “long, complex and difficult” negotiation that satisfied Spain and with a “historic” deal for southern hake, which doubles its quota for 2022 with a global tonnage of 9,953 tons by 2023, “the best figure in the last 8 years and the second best of the century.”
