The Bosnian government celebrates the “historic” move and hopes the measure will provide the country with new “opportunities” in terms of development
The European Union (EU) is taking new steps in its expansion. The Twenty-Seven on Tuesday granted Bosnia and Herzegovina candidate status to join the European bloc, recognizing Sarajevo’s community perspective. The decision, which will be endorsed at the EU leaders’ summit on Thursday, has been welcomed by the government concerned. It is a “historic” step, they celebrated from Bosnia and Herzegovina, whose executive hopes the measure will provide the country with new “opportunities” in terms of development, in view of more funds and investors.
Bosnian Foreign Minister Bisera Trkovic hailed the “good news” on her Twitter account, recalling contacts maintained with the various European governments and the High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrel, as well as the enlargement commissioner, Oliver Varhelyi, originates from a status he sees as both an “incentive” and a “recognition” of progress in the country.
This decision, which was determined by Brussels on the basis of compliance with 14 major political and democratic reforms – including the fight against corruption in Sarajevo – and progress in the agreement between the Bosnian parties to unblock the political paralysis in the country, comes on the heels of the steps taken by the EU to grant candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, to signal Georgia’s European perspective and to open accession negotiations with Albania and North Macedonia.
The agreement follows the guidelines of the European Commission, which issued its favorable opinion last October in the context of efforts to revive post-war enlargement policy in Ukraine, after understanding the need to unblock the Balkan issue and a clear signal of support for the region for measures such as the visa waiver for Kosovo, which was agreed a few weeks ago.
