About 156.4 million Brazilians will be called to the polls this Sunday to choose between the continuity of the far-right president Jair Bolsonaro and the return to power of former progressive president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Bolsonaro and Lula meet over a second round of the elections for which the Workers’ Party (PT) leader is the favourite, with a lead of between four and seven percentage points, according to the latest polls. Voting takes place in the country’s 5,570 cities and 181 locations abroad.

Both candidates, who have divided the electorate as had not been seen in Brazil’s recent history, they rushed to the last minute on Saturday to wrap up a fierce campaign that has lasted two and a half months.

Lula, the most voted candidate in the 1st round

In the first roundLula (president between 2003 and 2010), champion of a broad progressive front that center and center right forces have joined, was the most elected candidate with 48.4% of the vote, compared with 43.2% that he was the retired. army captain, who aspires to a new four-year term.

The favoritism of Lula, who got his political rights back last year after spending 580 days in prison corruption processes which were subsequently canceled has remained constant throughout the campaign.

20% abstinence

In recent weeks, Lula and Bolsonaro have focused on convincing the undecided and absent, who achieved 20% in the first round, despite the fact that Voting is compulsory in Brazil..

However, the positions of one and the other are practically fixed. The margin to get new support is minimal and in fact there have been no major swings in voting intentions in the most recent polls.

Lula continues with a big lead in the Northeast Region, the historic granary of the PT, and among the poorest populationrepresenting almost half of the electorate.

Bolsonaro in turn stands out one of the richest and most influential evangelical voterswho has tried to seduce Lula with the unveiling of a letter in which he spoke out against abortion and affirmed that the family is “a sacred thing.”
