Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni says the EU must remain united to help Ukraine resist Russian aggression while stepping up efforts to negotiate a ceasefire. Speaking to the Italian parliament ahead of the EU summit, Meloni said diplomatic space for a ceasefire was “extremely limited” but that Italy would do its best to support such an initiative.
“I think the European Union should play a more decisive role in this regard,” Meloni told the Chamber of Deputies. Opinion polls show that most Italians are in favor of a diplomatic solution to the conflict and against the Meloni government’s plan to send more weapons to Ukraine.
Meloni to the EU: stop migration flows
In her address to parliament, the prime minister, in office since October, called on the EU to do more to stem the flow of migrants. She also called on the EU and its 27 member states to act together to lower energy prices and prevent “speculation”. The relevant proposals are “insufficient” and “unrealizable”.
Peace talks, then stop the arms shipments
Arms deliveries to Ukraine will be halted once peace talks begin to end the Russian invasion, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto told parliament on Tuesday. “I am aware that military aid must and will end sooner or later when we have the peace talks we all hope for,” Crosetto said in the Senate.
Earlier this month, Italy’s cabinet passed a decree allowing the country to supply arms to Ukraine until the end of next year without parliamentary formal approval for each new shipment.
