The cold air from the north caused icy temperatures in Austria on Tuesday night. With a clear sky and no wind, minus degrees were measured at all 280 weather stations of the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG). It froze especially in the Salzburger Land Lungern and in Lower Austria.
Sometimes there were severe frosts with temperatures of minus 20 degrees and below. The coldest place in Salzburg: in St. Michael it was minus 21 degrees. However, it was the coldest with minus 23.9 degrees at the weather station in Schwarzau im Freiwald in the Waldviertel (Lower Austria).
Tyrol was briefly the leader
St. Jakob im Defereggental (Tyrol) was the leader for the coldest inhabited places in Austria until 07:00 on Tuesday morning. According to weather experts, a bitterly cold minus 21 degrees was measured there.
Mild weather expected for Austria
The highest temperature on Tuesday night was the ZAMG weather station in Hohenau an der March in Lower Austria with minus 4.1 degrees. It won’t be that cold the next few nights. Because slightly milder and moister air flows to Austria.
