The union is currently governing the successor to Metaller and FSG boss Rainer Wimmer, who will retire next year. The first step will be taken on Tuesday: the Social Democratic trade union faction, which dominates the pro-dominated party, nominates Federal Secretary Reinhold Binder as a candidate for the presidency. According to APA information, Josef Muchitsch will be Wimmer’s successor in the FSG.
Only the course is currently plotted. Binder’s clue is the first step. The official election will not take place until the pro-ge trade union conference, which will take place in Vienna on 14 and 16 June next year. The federal congress of the ÖGB follows soon after, where Muchitsch, head of construction/wood, will succeed Wimmer as head of the powerful faction of social-democratic trade unionists.
Katzian for re-candidate
The formal highlight of the ÖGB Congress will be the election of the president. But internally, the dice have long since been thrown. Wolfgang Katzian is likely to announce his re-election in the foreseeable future.
Union is becoming more diverse
In terms of power politics, the union will become somewhat more diverse in the future. The two big red unions, GPA through Katzian and pro-ge through Renate Anderl, chairman of the Labor Chamber who is back in power, retain the formally highest offices, but this time the FSG goes to the chairman of a relatively small union.
Muchitsch, who has long been considered ambitious and is also the social spokesman for the SPÖ in parliament, will take up a position that traditionally belongs to the major trade unions such as the metalworkers, which now operate as a production union after several mergers. Legendary as FSG boss was Rudolf Nürnberger, who was in office for almost 20 years. Wimmer has held this position since 2018 – namely as the successor to Katzian when he assumed the presidency.
A relatively unknown face in public is the new president of pro-ge. The 44-year-old Binder, a trained toolmaker from Upper Austria, has already taken on a wide range of tasks in the metalworking organization, for example as a senior secretary for organization and most recently as a federal secretary.
