Surgery not possible – Brave Elena (6) is at risk of going blind due to a tumour

Date:

Unfortunately, several blocks of chemotherapy failed to contain the growth in the little girl’s head. All hope is now pinned on antibody therapy.

Six-year-old Elena from the Kirchdorf neighborhood proudly wears the three-dot yellow blind ribbon. Unfortunately, she can no longer see anything in the left eye, and currently only 20 percent in the right eye. “The doctors fear that one day she will become completely blind,” says Mama Eva (36). The reason for this: an inoperable tumor presses on the daughter’s optic nerve and has threatened her life for years.

size of a ping pong ball
He was already 7 by 4 centimeters when Elena was just one year old. “She had terrible headaches and paralysis on her right side – her hand hung down, she smiled crookedly and kept choking.” During a six-hour operation, Elena’s skull cap was opened. Due to its delicate location, the tumor could not be removed.

disappointed hope
After a year and a half of intensive chemotherapy, everyone was hopeful – the malignant growth was also smaller. “Nine months later, during an MR check, he had grown another third,” Eva recalls with horror. The next intensive chemo was needed, which lasted a year. “At the same time, an antibody therapy was started, which is still done today,” says the mother.

New bad news
Once again, optimism was high on all sides. But then Corona came and Elena had to interrupt her therapies for two longer periods. “We noticed that she was not doing well. She had major motor problems again, was more exhausted and again complained of severe headaches. Unfortunately, an MR check in March this year confirmed that the tumor had grown again,” Eva sighs.

Grown again
Another chemotherapy was not possible due to the still too short time interval. The doctors also ruled out radiation. “The risk of too much destruction in her brain was too great.” Unfortunately, the tumor had continued to grow by June. Only in September did good news finally arrive: it had not been expanded further.

Career Goal “Superheroine”
Elena has been going to school since autumn and is following an integration course. Regular therapies accompany her daily life. She bravely endures the side effects. “She has such a loving, open character and is so tough and purposeful at the same time,” says the six-year-old’s mother, who distracts herself from her illness by singing and dancing. Elena’s career goal: “She wants to be a superhero someday,” Eva smiles.
At home, Elena now needs a reading device with special optics, which is estimated to cost € 4,800.
