London and Paris launch extensive rescue operation

In the English Channel, between France and the United Kingdom, a rescue operation was carried out this Wednesday in search of a “small boat” commonly used by clandestine migrants that had reportedly sunk, the British coastguard reported.

British authorities are “currently coordinating a search and rescue operation following a small boat incident off the coast of Kent” in south-east England, they said in a statement.

Boats and emergency services from several towns in the area were deployed, in addition to two British and a French helicopter.

Authorities in northern France also indicated that a naval patrol boat had been sent for reinforcement.

“A fishing boat that was nearby is also involved in the rescue,” the British Coast Guard said.

The term ‘small craft’ is often used for migrant boats trying to cross the English Channel into the UK.

Nearly 45,000 migrants have attempted to cross the Channel so far this year, compared to 30,000 last year.
