Several refugees trying to cross from France to England were killed in a boating accident in the English Channel. It is currently believed that at least three people died and 43 people were rescued alive. Up to 50 migrants were said to have been on board the boat. Due to the low temperatures, there is hardly any chance of survival for the missing.
According to media reports, a “major rescue operation” was originally underway around the boat in the English Channel. The Coast Guard coordinated a search and rescue mission with military, police and border guards on Wednesday morning. Two helicopters and British and French lifeboats were deployed.
Footage released by Sky News shows people climbing onto a lifeboat from an overcrowded black inflatable boat in the dark.
No hope for survivors
The search for missing persons will last all day, Sky News reported, citing internal sources. Due to the low temperatures – in recent nights they fell below zero in the region – however, no longer searched for survivors.
British Home Secretary: “Unfortunate incident”
British Home Secretary Suella Braverman spoke of a “regrettable incident” in the English Channel. “My thoughts are with those affected,” she added. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak only announced plans on Tuesday to crack down on illegal migration.

A year ago, 27 people died in a boating accident in the English Channel. Thousands of migrants have recently made the perilous crossing to the UK.
