As already expected by experts, the number of flu cases in Austria – as in the rest of Europe – has continued to rise sharply over the past week. In contrast, the number of corona-infected patients in home hospitals is likely to increase only slightly over the next two weeks.
Flu waves in Austria usually don’t start until December or early January, peaking in February – but this year is different. The undisputed leader in flu diseases is currently Upper Austria, followed by Tyrol, Styria and Vienna. MedUni Vienna reports this on Wednesday. At the same time, the current wave of flu is causing a sharp drop in the number of blood donors, which are particularly needed during the holiday season.
blood donor wanted
In Austria, one unit of blood is needed every 90 seconds, ie 1000 units per day. That is why the Red Cross is now sounding the alarm and is desperately looking for blood donors in Austria.
“The early wave of flu, colds and others means that we actually have a problem in eastern Austria. Too many people are sick and cannot donate blood. At the same time, hospitals are overcrowded and the need for blood products continues to rise. We ask you therefore to come and donate blood if you feel healthy and fit,” explained Red Cross federal rescue chief Gerry Foitik.
Corona illnesses in boys are decreasing
Experts from the Covid forecast consortium expect a slight increase in both normal wards and intensive care beds in the event of corona illnesses. The daily number of cases is currently only slightly increasing. For example, 6751 new infections were reported on Wednesday. However, according to the experts, positive tests are falling sharply in the age group of five to 14-year-olds.
According to the two-week forecast for the hospitals, 853 to 1374 corona-infected people in normal wards are expected by the forecast calculators across Austria on December 28. Yesterday, Tuesday, 1023 infected people were in the regular wards and 63 seriously ill corona infected in the local intensive care units.
compared to last year
A year ago, intensive care units were hit even harder by corona infections. 556 seriously ill people were treated in intensive care units across Austria. There were also 1,655 patients who tested positive on normal wards.
