The British asylum treaty with Rwanda could now cause a domino effect between the countries bordering the English Channel. Ireland wants to reform its immigration laws and also seek talks with London. However, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is blocking: there will be no talks with Ireland about the repatriation of asylum seekers who have come from Great Britain.
“We are not interested,” the Conservative leader told broadcaster ITV on Monday. “We will not accept returns from the EU via Ireland if the EU does not accept returns to France, where illegal migrants (to Britain) come from,” Sunak further said.
The British Prime Minister now ‘concentrated’ on Rwanda
The conservative politician emphasized that there have been no discussions with the EU about the return of migrants to France. “No, I am focused on getting our Rwanda program up and running.” A meeting scheduled for Monday between British Home Secretary James Cleverly and Irish Justice Minister Helen McEntee was canceled at short notice. There was speculation in Ireland that the British government did not want to appear too cooperative ahead of next Thursday’s English local elections.
Irish Foreign Minister Michel Martin partly blamed the recent increase on British plans to deport irregular asylum seekers to Rwanda, regardless of their origin. Prime Minister Sunak saw this as a success of his measures to prevent illegal entry across the English Channel.
