To help daughter – Tyrolean couple hand over tens of thousands of euros to crooks

Date:

Phone scammers posing as fake police officers are becoming increasingly professional. On Tuesday, unknown perpetrators managed to steal a large sum of money from an elderly Tyrolean couple from Innsbruck. The transfer to the crooks took place in Bavaria.

At around 1:30 p.m., the 86-year-old woman received a call on her landline from an alleged police officer. “He told the woman that her daughter was guilty of a serious traffic accident,” reports the real driver. The fake detective asked the Tyrolean to reveal both her mobile phone number and that of her husband. A short time later, she received another call on her cell phone.

“Lawyer” also spoke
The scammer on the other hand posed as a lawyer. “He claimed that the proceedings had been transferred to Germany because the victims of the accident were from there.” The “lawyer” also claimed that the public prosecutor’s office demanded a deposit of around 100,000 euros. During the telephone conversation, the 86-year-old was also allowed to talk to her alleged daughter. The scammers used a nagging female voice.

Real daughter’s call revealed fraud
The couple then drove to a meeting place in Bavaria. Before that, the man tried to reach his daughter via the landline. He ended up with the wrong police officer again. In Bavaria, the 86-year-old then handed over the money and other valuables to the crooks. Upon returning home, the real daughter reported to her parents. This exposed the fraud and the family filed a complaint.

Numerous real police alerts
The real detectives have repeatedly this year pointed out the dangers of such calls. As a reminder, tips from the police:

  • Ignore such calls, interrupt the conversations.
  • Do not accept requests for money.
  • Call the real police.
