The DGT remembers: This is how you should drive in heavy rain scenarios

Date:

The month of December is particularly rainy all over Spain and the roads are severely affected by the accumulation of water, which has forced roads to be cut off due to their poor condition. However, it is necessary to remain careful on the roads, even if they are not closed, since, as the DGT reminds,
tire grip is less when the road is wet.

From the General Directorate of Traffic, they have shared some recommendations to drive safely when it rains, as braking, for example, is not as effective as on dry asphalt and even
visibility can be compromised.

It should also be borne in mind that the first drops usually contain dust found in the atmosphere and, together with the leaves that may fall from the trees, make the road very slippery.

Of the recommendations, the most basic is to increase the safety distance from the vehicles in front to avoid rear-end accidents and to switch on the low beams. Also use the heating and air conditioning to prevent the windows from misting up and thus reducing our visibility, which is already affected by rain on the windshield.

When overtaking, the DGT recommends increasing the speed of the windshield wipers to improve visibility.

In addition, special attention should be paid to aquaplaning, which occurs when the tire cannot clear the water from the road due to a lack of tread, lack of pressure or driving at a higher speed than it should. That is why it is so important to regularly check the condition of the tires to gain traction in these types of conditions.

If we nevertheless suffer from aquaplaning with the vehicle, it is important to avoid an accident
do not brake suddenly, hold the steering wheel firmly and when we find ourselves recovering traction, we gently alter the trajectory.
