The introduction of new scanners in the next 18 months could lift anti-terrorism measures in place since 2006
The UK government has presented legislation in Parliament setting the June 2024 date so that airports in the security control area have installed the technology to ensure that passengers do not have to deposit 100 milliliter containers in clear bags or keep your laptops separate from the rest of your luggage.
It was previously announced that the United Kingdom would follow the path taken by the airports in the United States, Germany and the Netherlands, and now this legislation confirms that. The aim is to end the disruption caused by controls introduced at airports around the world in 2006 following the discovery by British security forces of a plan to shoot down planes with explosives in bottles or drink cans.
The change that will allow these restrictions to be lifted is the deployment at airports of CT scanners that provide a three-dimensional x-ray image of passengers’ baggage. Today, scanners operating at almost all airports provide controllers with two-dimensional images.
The new Transport Secretary, Mark Harper, has stated that with the introduction of the latest security technology, “queues will be reduced, the passenger experience will be improved and, most importantly, potential threats will be detected.” With the changes, the fluid restriction to a maximum of one hundred milliliters is replaced by an additional two liters.
The announcement of the upcoming changes indicates that the full release will depend on the adoption of similar measures by other airports. He advises passengers to consider the rules at the airports on their route to see how they can benefit from relaxation. The European Commission is considering a similar relaxation.
The new technology is being tested at London’s two busiest airports, Heathrow, in the west of the British capital, and Gatwick, in the south. The announcement of the government’s decision has been welcomed by the airport owners’ association as well as the travel and tourism industry, which are now recovering from the economic blow they received during the pandemic.
