A refrigerated truck loaded with drugs was also among the vehicles that fell off the Morandi Bridge in Genoa on August 14, 2018. This is evident from a telephone conversation intercepted in March 2020 between two bosses of the ‘Ndrangheta, the mafia in Calabria, as part of a judicial investigation that led to the arrest of 76 people.
As the phone calls the investigators tapped revealed, 900 kilograms of hashish was hidden in a cold store in a truck that crashed in the accident on the bridge.
Mafia tried to locate the vehicle
The intoxicant initially ended up with the truck in a depot for accident cars in Genoa. The truck was then towed to Frosinone south of Rome. The Mafia attempted to locate the vehicle to recover the drug shipment, investigators reported Thursday, according to media reports.
A criminal who worked in the scrap metal recycling industry was contacted and was able to identify and transport the body. It is currently unknown whether the drug shipments have been seized by the gangsters.
The process has been going on since July
The bridge collapse in Genoa killed 43 people. Hundreds who lived in houses under the bridge were left homeless. One possible cause is negligent maintenance of the structure with its steel suspension cables. The process of the accident has been going on since July.
59 people are accused, including Giovanni Castellucci, the ex-boss of the Autostrade per l’Italia (ASPI) highway company, operator of the collapsed bridge. The allegations are negligence, obstruction of road safety, forgery and deliberate failure to take safety measures.
