More than 120 dead in torrential rains that hit Brazil

Heavy rainfall in Pernambuco state has led to landslides and house collapses in Recife and several neighboring municipalities

Authorities in the state of Pernambuco, in eastern Brazil, on Wednesday raised 120 people who died as a result of the torrential rains that hit the area for five days, leaving at least four missing.

Bad weather has left 7,312 people homeless and at least 14 cities have declared a state of emergency, according to Brazilian news portal G1.

“We won’t stop until we find all the missing people. We are now at a crucial point,” Pernambuco Governor Paulo Camara emphasized on Tuesday.

For its part, the National Civil Defense reported on its Twitter account that there is a “very high” warning of more flooding in Pernambuco, including the capital Recife.

Rescue services resumed operations on Tuesday after being forced to suspend operations the previous day due to the storm re-registering in the area.

The main areas affected are Vila dos Milagres, in western Recife; Healed IV, in Jaboatao; Areeiro, in Camaragibe, and Jardim Monte Verde, on the border between Recife and Jaboatao.

Camara explained Monday that under the state of emergency, authorities will allocate some 100 million reais (19.6 million euros) to pay for rescue and salvage work, as well as for the construction of infrastructure damaged by the rain.

“We know that the first few hours are very difficult (…) I have spoken to all mayors so that they prepare a work plan to know what support actions from the state they need,” Camara explains.

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro flew over the affected area on Monday and took the opportunity to criticize Camara for not consulting him on the response to this heavy rain.
